Two types of residential generators and their differences

There are two types of residential generators; one is portable and the other is standby generator. They both run on natural gas, diesel, gasoline and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Portable generators come in cheapest models especially those that run on gasoline. But they have short running time and is therefore not reliable for prolonged power back-ups. You also have to refill their gas tanks from time to time causing inconvenience especially if the power interruption is brought by bad weather conditions such as storms.

A stationary or a home residential generator on the other hand can provide permanent power since they are directly attached to an external fuel source, such as an external gas line.

A portable generator however can also be attached to the same external source, which can extend its running hours.
Another fact is, portable generator has to be transferred from the storage, filled with fuel or attached to a fuel line, and manually operated for it to function. Meanwhile, a permanent or a standby generator can start automatically since it can detect power loss through an automatic transfer switch. This works because it is already attached to the fuel source. The transfer time for an automatic system usually takes 10-30 seconds. It is very proficient when it comes to higher power level that it can produce compared to the portable generators. Although costly, it will be very worth every cent spent because it is reliable in providing electricity especially during long-term power outage, since it can supply electricity to the whole house.
